Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge
The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge was considered a humedal of international interest in year 1991 in a Ramsar Convention.
Due to the different characteristics it posses, it is very easy to appreciate the biodiversity in it. Located in the northern area between Los Chiles and Guatuso, Caño Negro is one of the most important humedals in Costa Rica with 9969 hectares and receiveing around 3500 mm of yearly precipitation. |

From La fortuna we will head to Los chiles at 7:15 a.m. in a confortable microbus with air conditioned. During the trip our guide will make a stop at a side of the highway to show you the iguanas (Iguana, iguana) at Muelle.
As soon as we return to the main highway you will be able to appreciate the different plantations of planton, sugar, yuca, oranges and the scenic pastures for cattle. 10 kilometers before arriving to Los Chiles we will find the Park which is a little town in the way to Caño Negro. Following we will board a boat for around 4 hours, always searching for the singular flora and fauna of this place, such as:
Espatulas rosadas (Ajaia ajaja), Cigueñones (Mycteria americana), Jabirú (Jabiru mycteria), which cannot be observed in Rio Frio.
Also Cormoranes (Halacrocorax olivaceus) , the northern jacana (Jacana spinosa) the anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), the purple chicken (Porphininula martinica), Caimanes (Cayman crocodilus) and some cocodiles (Crocodilus acutus) and many, many more.
Just after our trip by boat we will stop at an elegant and comfortable place called Caño Negro Lodge for a delicious lunch.
Around 2:30 p.m. we will be on our way back to La fortuna.
